For administering expired drugs to 12 children, govt suspends 2 nurses at Gandhi Hospital

Having learned of the matter, the health minister of Telangana Dr. C. Laxma Reddy issued an immediate order to enquire into the incident. Based on which Ms Ramani, Director of Medical education swung into action and found fault with two nurses and a Post Graduate Medical doctor on duty, whose negligent attitude had caused allergic reactions to 12 small kids. 

“In our enquiry, we found lapses on the part of two nurses and a PG doctor, whose negligent attitude caused great suffering to the small kids. As per case sheet, the children who were expected to be given Amoxiclav were wrongly administered with expired sodium Sulphate medicine. We have immediately suspended the two nurses Shoba and Sunita and had even issued a memo to Dr. Naveen Singh for dereliction of his duty,” informed Ramani. 

Earlier, the health minister, expressed his concern that Ghandi Medical College Hospital is a leading multi specialty government medical college hospital in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad and despite of taking adequate steps to develop infrastructure, installation of advanced medical equipment and employing necessary staff, the hospital is always in news for wrong reasons. 

“This year we have decided to install most advanced diagnostic and medical equipments in the leading government hospitals of Ghandi and Osmania teaching hospitals for which the state government is spending Rs.500 crores. However, despite our efforts to improve healthcare facilities, lackadaisical attitude by the healthcare staff is bringing bad name to this great hospital,” Dr. Reddy said.

However, the minister hoped that in the next 3-6 months, with advanced treatment facilities available and all vacant posts of doctors, staff nurses and other support staff filled up, the government is planning to provide best quality healthcare services to the public. “Osmania and Ghandi are one of the two big hospitals where every day more than 2,000 patients approach these hospitals. Naturally there are small issues crop up here and there with the support staff as managing such a huge rush of patients is quite difficult for the staff. But still as we have owed to provide the best quality care on par with corporate hospitals, the state government is continuously working to improve it. As part of our efforts we have decided to set up a new 65 bedded intensive care unit in Ghandi Hospital in addition to its existing capacity,” informed the Minister. 

Very soon the state government is planning to install advanced diagnostic equipments like MRI, CT-Scan, Auto Analyzers, Mamogram, 2D Echo etc., in all the teaching medical colleges in the state. Similarly equipments like CT-Scan, Ultrasound, Auto analyzers and Semi auto analyzers will also be supplied to district hospitals and even in Primary healthcare centers in the rural areas through Telangana State Medical Services and Infrastructure Development Corporation (TSMSIDC).
