Gastro esophageal reflux disease
It is a condition in which the stomach contents leak backwards from the stomach into the esophagus; it is usually caused by failure of the muscle valve (called the lower esophageal sphincter) between the stomach and the esophagus to close properly this can irritate the esophagus and cause heartburn and other symptoms.
Causes: Obesity, Use of alcohol, Scleroderma, Pregnancy, Smoking.
Symptoms: Cough or wheezing, Hiccups, Difficulty swallowing, Nausea after eating, Heartburn or a burning pain in the chest, Sore throat.
Diagnosis: Esophageal manometry, Endoscopy
Treatment:
PPIs decrease the amount of acid produced in the stomach
H2 blockers lower the amount of acid released in the stomach
Heartburn and other symptoms should improve after surgery. Surgery may be an option for people whose symptoms do not go away with lifestyle changes and medicines.
